South Africa: 153 arrested in looting and riots targeting foreign-owned shops
JOHANNESBURG – South African police
say 32 more people have been arrested for looting shops owned by
foreign nationals, bringing the total number of people arrested to 153
since the riots began earlier this week.
Police said in a statement issued on Friday that the suspects were arrested for public violence and possession of stolen property in the Soweto township south of Johannesburg.
While Soweto was calm Friday, police reacted to reports of looting in townships to the west and north of Johannesburg, according to the South African Press Association. At least two people died since the looting began.
The violence was sparked when a foreign national shot a 14-year-old boy, who was allegedly trying to rob his shop.
