Tragedy in Shikarpur

Published: January 31, 2015
BADIN: It has just been a month and a half since the Peshawar tragedy occurred and we have yet another bomb ripping through the imambargah of Lakhi Dar in Shikarpur, where worshippers were offering Friday prayers. So far, at least 57 people have been martyred and many are battling death.
The incident occurred when a suicide bomber, masquerading as a worshipper, went down for prostration and detonated the bomb in the midst of around 300 people. This is a clear and lucid example of how serious the government is about counterterrorism operations. Indeed, there has been much chest-thumping and bravado, but are the people any safer? Where is the ‘security’ that we are supposed to get?
The government has not learnt a lesson from the Peshawar attack and did not keep security at high alert. If Peshawar could not wake it up, then what will? What other monstrous calamity will it take to prod the government into effective action? I request those at the helm of affairs to please take their jobs seriously. Make sure places of worship are on high alert at all times, especially the ones frequented by members of the Shia community, who have sacrificed a lot in recent years.
