DELHI: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is likely to make
India his first port of call after PM Narendra Modi invited him to New
Delhi.
Sirisena's spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne was quoted as saying in Colombo on Saturday that the new president proposes to visit India next month. In a hard fought electoral battle, Sirisena had upset the formidable two-time President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In his congratulatory message to Sirisena, Modi had on Friday reaffirmed India's "continued solidarity and support for Sri Lanka's peace, development & prosperity".
"I spoke to Shri Maithripala Sirisena and congratulated him. I congratulate the people of Sri Lanka on the peaceful and democratic poll process," he said.
