RAWALPINDI: The process of establishing the military courts has been initiated and initially nine military courts are being established across the country.
According to the ISPR, three courts each will be established in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Punjab, two in Sindh and one in Balochistan. These courts will start functioning soon. It is worth mentioning here that the government has drawn a 20-point National Action Plan (NAP) in the wake of the terrorist attack at the Peshawar Army Public School.

Setting up the military courts is on the NAP’s agenda. Political and religious parties of the country have had marathon meetings to ponder on setting up the military courts. As a result, on January 6 the National Assembly brought in the 21st Amendment in the Constitution.

The political parties had agreed that military courts were inevitable in this extraordinary situation. Religio-political parties had boycotted the NA and the Senate sessions in protest against the language used in the 21st Amendment and are scheduled to meet under the leadership of Maulana Fazlur Rehman on January 22. In the 1990s, the Supreme Court had declared the military courts null and void.
