Neo-realist film director Rosi dies
Francesco Rosi, an Italian director whose gritty films offered a
socially charged look into the country's underworld of crime and
corruption, died yesterday at age 92.
Rosi was born and raised in Naples, a city long infested by mafia,
and later moved to Rome. Inspired by Italy's post-Second World War
neo-realist filmmakers, some of Rosi's best movies delved into the
stories of real people. The Mattei Affair won the top prize at the
Cannes Film Festival in 1972, while Hands Over The City starring Rod
Steiger picked up the Golden Lion at the Venice festival in 1963.
