The river Ganges is back in the news.
Months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to clean the holy river , authorities in northern India are saying it was the source of more than 100 decomposing bodies found in one of its offshoots.
Police found the bodies in a river in Unnao district of the state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, the state’s director general of police Arun Kumar Gupta said in a statement.

The bodies appeared as the river has been running low. Authorities have ruled out foul play but are investigating why so many cadavers have appeared at once.
Generally Indians cremate their dead before putting the remains in the river. However some cannot afford a full cremation and dump the bodies of their loved ones that have passed on directly into the river. Meanwhile some Hindus believe putting the bodies of unwed girls that have died into the river without cremating them will ensure that they will be reborn into the family.
Mr. Modi came to power in May and one of his campaign pledges was to revive the river which has been struggling with pollution and hurt by a drop in water levels due to the construction of hydro-electric dams.
